Dir. Jahnvi Mody
What will be left of a society if it cannot fathom and remains oblivious of the dangers approaching a child hidden under the garb of a relationship? If no heed is paid to child’s emotional need, and we fail to protect ‘innocence’ – the dark circle of shame and guilt will engulf us sooner than we can even think of it. Kaala Teeka* is a story of two young girls, Shikha and Poorvi, who are similar in body and spirit but are growing up in distinctly different domestic environments. They each have unpleasant encounters, but their reactions to the episode forewarns us about the people they are becoming. Are we listening to them? Are we as parents and guardians preparing them to face the real dangers lurking in the outside world?

This short is a window into the lives of those affected by the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013, when over 100 people died and nearly 50,000 people were displaced. Over the past seven years the documentation of this region in India has been annual, with complete access to the local madrasas and villages. The communities hope that through this project their collective story can be told, and that communities outside will be moved to provide assistance for the development of their region. I share that hope, and thus present this humble short for review. All of the children presented are students from the local madrasas, and have been photographed by me since 2013.

Having experienced a heartbreak during the lockdown, they opened the 'Dil Tuta Aashiq Chaiwala' (The Heratbroken Lover Tea Shop) which they see as "more than a business - a platform for the heartbroken". Through them as focal points, the film tries to get a glimpse into the politics and performance of masculinities that shapes love, romance and heartbreak in a tier-two Indian city like Dehradun. This is their world of PUB-G and reels, you tube and influencers, gym and cafe cultures that shapes their notions of love and intimacy, during the corona-enforced lockdown and beyond. The film hopes to be a light-hearted comment on how young boys from urban and semi-urban contexts draw upon a whole world of pop culture resources to deal with matters of the heart.

The Despondent explores the human psyche in relation to memory through a character who is fixated in a constant loop after the death of a loved one.
The character represents all of us mortal beings, trying to relive the past again and again with no success, knowing but not accepting the truth. He embarks on an internal journey of denial, acceptance and reconciliation making him a despondent at the end of it.
